Here is a reliable antivirus that is absolutely free. Avast! is the best free AV I have found so far. It doesn't have the overhead of Norton or McAfee. For personal home use the software is free. You must register the software, but they do not share your e-mail addy nor spam the heck out of you. They have some pay services available also. Enjoy.

I have used this virus scanner myself and recommended it to a friend.

Very good software for free.

I like it better than Panda for the sheer reason I can set and forget. I don't like relying on the web to do my scans either...bad internet connection generally. I drop connection at home like Drew Carey drops bills at a strip club.

It is free software.
It lasts forever, or until they decide to stop offering it.

How long does this antivirus last?

I thought I read somewhere on the site that you have to renew it once a year...even if you are a home user. Home users get the software free though.

Yes, you have to renew your license yearly, but that takes all of a couple seconds. It has been handled very well in the past. You'll receive a pop up message, click on the link and request a new registration be sent to you.

Now I just wish the free version would work on my Win2003 server. Oh well.

Grisoft also offers their Antivirus program free for home non-commericial use. I've used it before, and it seems to work really well, no re-registration required either.

This is What I use on my Computers. Works Great and has caught a few Viruses. But if the other one works good then cool! Free is always Good! As long as its not Stolen. :o

Anyone have any opinions on which is better: Grisoft AVG, or Avast? And why?

I'll stick with reliable Norton AV and Internet Secure. It has caught some real crazy stuff that tried to infect my PC. You can even get it Free AR at some places. Staples had that deal last week I believe.

I like Norton, but when I try to install it on an older computer, it slows the system down to a crawl.

Be sure that you meet the minimum system requirements so that your PC doesn't grind to a halt.

How true. It takes my PC about 5min to boot up because of it. I have a 2Ghz system with tons of memory too. The price we pay to prevent malicious hackers. At least spyware will be illegal soon thanks to the current administation's push.

I've used AVG for... about 2 years now and I've had nothing get through. I also feel that it's less obtrusive than Norton, and McAffee, and definitely less of a resource hog. I recomended it to everyone I know.

Agreed.

Used AVG since it's existance and i've always recommended it.

Another Free AntiVirus program

Computer Associates EZ Armor (AntiVirus + Firewall) 2005.

CA has teamed up with Microsoft, and has made available EZArmor 2005 available for free through the link below. I've been using it for almost a year now, and it finds more than Norton did. It updates itself and doesn't bog down your system like Norton does.

This is a full 1-year subscription !! for free.
